Why You Don’t Feel Quite Like Yourself – And What to Do About It
Jun 14, 2025
Do you sometimes wonder:
“Why am I so tired?”
“Where did my motivation go?”
“Is it just me, or is everything harder than it used to be?”
If so, you’re not alone. Many people in their 40s and 50s reach a point where their body, mind, and energy just don’t seem to work the way they used to. You’re not imagining it. And no—you don’t have to just put up with it.
This blog is here to help.
The Midlife Shift: It’s Not All in Your Head (But Your Head Matters Too)
Midlife is a time of huge transition—biologically, emotionally, and socially. Hormonal changes (yes, for men and women), increased responsibilities, creeping stress, and the weight of life’s demands can all build up. Add in a slower metabolism, disrupted sleep, aches and pains, and a sense that something’s off, and it’s no wonder people come to their GP saying:
“I just don’t feel quite right anymore.”
The truth is, this is a whole-body issue, not just a set of separate symptoms. It’s about the interplay between:
- Hormones (oestrogen, testosterone, cortisol, insulin)
- Sleep and stress
- Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
- Mental load and emotional wellbeing
- Lifestyle patterns and behavioural inertia
And the good news? Small, evidence-based changes can make a big difference.
What This Blog Will Give You
I’m Dr Nick Harvey, a GP and medical educator—and I’ve spent years supporting people to make sense of their health in midlife and beyond. This blog exists to give you:
- Straight-talking explanations about what’s really going on in your body and mind
- Medical insight that makes sense, without jargon
- Practical tools and small shifts that actually help—without requiring a total life overhaul
- Permission to stop blaming yourself and start working with your body, not against it
What’s Coming Up
In the weeks ahead, we’ll explore topics like:
- Why your energy crashes mid-afternoon (and what to do about it)
- Understanding perimenopause and male midlife hormone shifts
- How stress affects weight, sleep, and mood
- Smart ways to move more (even if you feel stiff and tired)
- And the powerful connection between mindset and medicine
Because you deserve to feel good again. Not perfect. Not “younger.” Just yourself—healthy, clear-headed, and capable.
